The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a profound shock to global healthcare systems and the wider community, highlighting the close relationship between pandemics and environmental health.
On the one hand, the pandemic has shown that emerging infectious diseases are increasing due to a range of factors, including the widespread use of antimicrobials, which can promote antibiotic-resistant infections. On the other hand, it is estimated that 4.4% of global net greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to the healthcare sector. If the global healthcare sector were a country, it would rank as the fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gases worldwide, according to the healthcare climate footprint.
In light of these considerations, ANIPIO has a strong incentive to integrate these topics into its core competencies, with the aim of fostering cultural and behavioral change among healthcare leaders and professionals.
In September 2022, during the annual ANIPIO conference, the launch of a new area of activity within the Scientific Society—AnipioGreen—was announced. This initiative is centered on addressing the following key questions:
How can a Scientific Society inspire institutions, organizations, professionals, and citizens toward sustainable interventions for the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections?
In what ways, and with which tools, can clinical nurses, infection control specialist nurses, and nurse managers reduce their environmental impact when planning and implementing infection prevention and control interventions?
Within this new working paradigm, ANIPIO will expand its scope of action to innovate the range of services offered, enhance the quality of research and training activities, and, above all, ensure sustainable care for both people and the environment.
A comprehensive overview of these new activities and the underlying philosophy is provided in the following document:

These consist of five recommendations developed by the AnipioGreen Working Group, focused on the relationship between environmental sustainability and appropriateness of care.
The activities of the AnipioGreen Working Group (Gruppo di lavoro AnipioGreen), launched in February 2023, led to the development of these five recommendations using the methodology established for good practice recommendations by Choosing Wisely Italy.Choosing Wisely Italy.
This document represents a continuation of the ANIPIO TOP FIVE Recommendations on the risk of inappropriate practices for healthcare workers and patients, developed by ANIPIO in 2017(Raccomandazioni TOP FIVE Anipio sul rischio di inappropriatezza per gli operatori e i pazienti)
